These famous verses of Alexander Pope hit perhaps no field of knowledge as adequately as the philosophy of science. Distances in space and time have shrunk immensely because of the advances of science in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and the power put into the hands of men has increased to a hardly imaginable degree; but a great many critics of contemporary civilization would point out that, despite these achievements, mankind has not become happier and is facing today dangers which have their sources in these very achievements of science. The responsibility for this unfortunate situation is ascribed by some authors to the fact that today the social sciences have advanced much more slowly than the physical sciences, and other authors like to point at the paucity of support given to moral and philosophical knowledge compared with knowledge of the material world. If we were to express ourselves in a more abstract and conceptual way, we would say that the rift between science and philosophy has been blamed for the inability of science to make its advances a blessing for men. Quite a few religious, educational, and even political leaders have advised that the advance of science should be retarded administratively in order to accelerate advances in the humanities. Such a promotion of moral values by administrative and financial means would hardly be feasible and cannot be sincerely desired by governments and responsible social groups.
