Synopsis

This work brings together a collection of original essays on the contemporary study of international political economy (IPE). It provides contrasting and challenging interpretations of the study of IPE and the global political economy in general. It also exposes the reader to major issues and problems in international political economy such as European unification, U.S.-Japanese trade tensions, Africa's role in the world economy, international debt, and international financial reform.

The study of international political economy (IPE) is defined by its systematic endeavor to understand and explain the patterns of development and change in the global political economy. As such, ipe, properly understood, constitutes essentially a macro social science. Furthermore, it is a multidisciplinary area of inquiry in the sense that its ontological basis rests on a broad set of guidelines, assumptions, and propositions that are drawn from a variety of disciplines such as political science, economics, and international relations. in this way, ipe is an especially attractive social science field by virtue of the fact that it is rather unique in its conscious efforts and desirability to engage at a level of theorization that rejects the compartmentalization of knowledge and the fragmentation of social reality.

Naturally, the study of ipe, like any other area or field of academic study, is characterized by different modes of analysis and interpretations about the interaction of politics and economics in the international sphere. Diversity is indeed one of the most important factors in the shaping of the field; also it is one more reason why ipe is considered by many to represent at the present time the most vibrant and stimulating area of academic discourse in the social sciences. ipe seems to provide some of the most interesting and challenging insights and ideas about the global condition and the challenges facing us all in a world marked by the increasing internationalization of capital and capitalist relations and the complexities of the dialectics of economic interdependence on the one hand and uneven development on the other.
