The three great problems that all men must solve if their collectivities are to persist are the mastery of nature, social control, and socialization. The mastery of nature is accomplished in a wide variety of economic and scientific-technical groups; social control is accomplished in governmental, political, legal, law enforcement, and military groups; socialization is accomplished in families, and educational, religious, welfare, and health institutions.

Socialization in its most comprehensive sense comprises all those collective actions by which events and activities which are not social in themselves are transformed into social form.

The human individual, for example, is not born social. He has no instincts for being social in any special way. At birth he cannot speak a word in any language. He is, however, dependent to an unusual degree and could not survive without the help of other humans. They will transform him into a particular kind of social being, equipped with knowledge, skills, value systems and norms.
