The Tropical World: Its Social and Economic Conditions and Its Future Status

Excerpt

The more advanced countries of the world have seen their interest in tropical lands fully awakened. The increasing demand for rubber, coffee, cocoa, and other products of the hot belt, the growth of humanitarian feeling towards the peoples of that belt, and the rise of nationalism among the latter have all attracted attention. Great Britain, who is responsible for a larger part of the hot belt than any other nation, has devoted huge sums to the development of her tropical 'colonies.' It seems proper, therefore, that the conditions existing in the hot belt, and especially those related to disease and soil, should be known to people in this country. What are the prospects of the tropical lands and their peoples? How can the tropics best play its part in the world? These questions are answered by M. Gourou in a book which should be in the hands of every colonial administrator and planter. The author has had first-hand acquaintance with the tropics, having resided in Indo-China for some years and visited different parts of tropical and equatorial Africa and South America. The present translation has been brought up to date by him and owes most of its photographic illustrations to his camera. The translator is grateful to him for reading the typescript and for the many additions he has made to the English version of his text. The only departure from the arrangement of the French edition is the placing of the chapter summaries in the list of contents instead of at the heads of the chapters.
