In portraying President Eisenhower and his associates in action in the first Republican administration in twenty years, I have assembled a great deal of material which ordinarily does not come to light until long after a President has left office and which in certain respects is unique. This includes a wealth of unpublished information, as well as numerous interviews with the Cabinet officers and other key men involved in the shaping of historic events. Although it is too early to write a definitive record of the administration, I am hopeful that the quality of this material may make the book, within its limits, a durable history of the President's first three years in office.

It is to the best of my ability a reporter's book, straightforward and objective. What did the President do? What was his attitude? Whom did he talk to? What did he say? What did others say? Did something please the President or did it anger him? Was there any humor or pathos in the incident? What entered into the President's thinking? Why did he do what he did? These questions, applied to the many different situations and problems, are what this book is mostly about.

My purpose has not been to praise or blame or make a critical appraisal, but to tell a story. I have tried to give an intimate picture of the varied and critical scenes of the President's life in the White House, in his office, at Cabinet meetings, in private conferences, in the making of high policy -- and in some of his lighter moments, painting, playing golf or cooking steaks on the roof.

In doing so I have been sparing in my own observations, but not to such a rigorous extent as to omit comment when the story requires it.
