Excerpt

The number of specialist journals of theology is gradually becoming incalculable. The result is that essays which 'appear' in them tend rather to be hidden than to be published. Naturally it is not the business of the author to judge whether the obscurity into which these essays fall is a just fate or a regrettable misfortune. But if he has the right to make anything appear at all, he cannot be reproached for trying to publish his work in some other form which will make it more probable that someone will read it. And so we have attempted here to disinter a few essays from periodicals, leaving out work concerned purely with the history of dogma.

The essays on the theology of the spiritual life will appear in a separate volume.
