Manufacturing in Arizona

Excerpt

THIS STUDY is based on both primary and secondary sources of information, that is, on both field and library sources. The literature has been examined, and statistics have been obtained from a variety of sources. In addition, a great deal of primary data has been gathered by means of questionnaires and interviews. Each of the manufacturing firms in Arizona was contacted by mail questionnaire and/;or personal interview. Approximately 37 per cent of the firms, representing 68 per cent of the total manufactural employment of the state, responded with usable answers. Since much of the study is based on the questionnaire/interview data, it could not have been accomplished without the coœperation of many individuals. Some 325 Arizonans associated with manufacturing responded to the mail questionnaires or submitted to personal interviews. Particularly valuable information and advice were received from William Langbehn of the Employment Security Commission of Arizona in Phoenix.

Several graduate students assisted in such tedious chores as questionnaire circulation and data recording; these included Robert Hopkins and Ted Izzard of the Department of Geography of the University of California, Los Angeles, and Robert Mancell of the Department of Geography of the University of Michigan.

The maps and graphs represent the cartographic skill of Duilio Peruzzi of the Department of Geography of the University of Michigan.

The questionnaire and interview data were tabulated by the Western Data Processing Center of the University of California, Los Angeles.

The study was financed by generous grants from the University Research Committee of the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Department of Geography of the University of Michigan.

I am very grateful to these individuals and institutions for their assistance.
