Dragon in the Kremlin: A Report on the Russian-Chinese Alliance

Excerpt

Over the last few years, many disagreements have come to the surface of the Russian-Chinese alliance. They have focused world attention on this unusual coalition of friendly enemies. This is a book about the alliance. Although I have read most of the pertinent material and have talked with most of the right people, I have no illusions that this is a definitive book. I have attempted in it merely to bring us up to date and to raise some important questions. If this book succeeds in stimulating an awareness of the dangers the alliance poses for us, I shall consider it a success.

So many kind people have helped me with the book that it would be impossible to thank them all. But I should especially like to thank Marshall D. Shulman of Harvard; Alexander Dallin, Henry Roberts, Allen Whiting, C. Martin Wilbur, and O. Edmund Clubb of Columbia; Sig Mickelson and John F. Day of CBS News; William Ackerman of the CBS Foundation, which awarded me a CBS News and Public Affairs Fellowship for the academic year 1959- 1960; Henry Graff, Director of the Fellowship program at Columbia; the Ford Foundation, which awarded me a travel grant so I could conduct an interview project; Rose Bell Green, who painstakingly copyread and edited the manuscript; and, finally, my wife, Mady, who was colleague, travel companion, editor, and a constant source of encouragement.

One separate note: all of this book, except for one section of the last chapter, was written before I was appointed Moscow Correspondent for CBS News. Therefore its conception and its views are entirely unconnected with CBS News. If there are any errors, they are mine. If there are any misconceptions, they are mine.
