Excerpt

By way of Preface I wish to thank Herr Gustav Scheck, the first solo flute of the Königsberg wireless orchestra, who read the proofs of this book with the most painstaking care; my publishers, who by agreeing to the inclusion of hundreds of musical examples, made it possible to substitute practical illustrations for merely theoretic explanations of the problems dealt with; and Herr Neuberg, director of the firm J. J. Weber, for his unremitting attention to the printing and for suggesting many important improvements.

The book is the fruit of the experience acquired during my work at Winterthur, and I must express my gratitude to my friend Werner Reinhart, thanks to whom I was given the opportunity to acquire it, and to the Winterthur Musical Society, whose ready and vigilant co-operation proved stimulating and helpful from beginning to end.

HERMANN SCHERCHEN.

KÖNIGSBERG (PRUSSIA), JUNE 21, 1929.
