A History of Greek Religion

Excerpt

In the Autumn of 1920, at the invitation of Archbishop Söderblom, I gave before the University of Uppsala, on behalf of the Olaus Petri foundation, a course of lectures on the history of Greek Religion. These lectures, with additions, were published in Swedish in the following year. The text has been revised throughout for the English translation, and I have made substantial changes in the first chapter. A journey to Greece in the spring of 1923 gave me the opportunity of studying the unpublished monuments more closely, and I worked over the whole subject-matter of this chapter in a course of lectures 'On the Minoan-Mycenaean Religion and its survival in Greek Religion', delivered before the University College of Wales at Aberystwyth in May 1923.

My special thanks are due to Mr. A. J. B. Wace for permission to refer to unpublished results of the excavations of the British School at Mycenae, and to Mr. F. M. Cornford for some translations of difficult passages in ancient authors, more especially Pindar. His Greek Religious Thought, an excellent collection of illustrative passages, will be the best companion to this sketch.

LUND, August 1924.
