My friend of long years, Doctor McCaleb, has asked me to write a note of introduction to his study of the AARON BURR CONSPIRACY. Though fully aware that no word from me can add anything to the weight and significance of his book, since his scholarship is already accepted by American historians of undoubted competence, I am happy to join him in this adventure, with the thought that perhaps it is possible to help widen his audience beyond the range of professional students.

Of Doctor McCaleb's training and equipment it is scarcely necessary to speak. For many years he has combined research with the preoccupations of a practical, busy life. Probably no one in the country has a more thorough acquaintance with the printed and manuscript materials dealing with the career of Aaron Burr. At all events, it is certain that he has spared no pains in his effort to get at the authentic facts bearing upon the case in hand, and has sought to array them in a form that will engage the interest of his reader.

That Aaron Burr deserves to be seen in a new setting cannot be denied. His extraordinary character and career have been obscured and distorted by the unfortunate closing of his adventurous life. As Guedalla has wittily remarked, the greatness of a statesman in history depends in a large measure upon the nature of his exit. Had Lincoln been spared his tragic ending, had he lived through the scandals of reconstruction, the Credit Mobilier, the Star Route frauds, and the Whiskey Ring, and been forced to accept some of the responsibility that fell upon his party, the Emancipator would doubtless appear in another light than that shed by the glamour of eulogy.
