Excerpt

JOURNEY THROUGH MY YEARS means just what it says, yet what I saw, not what I did, is the important thing. In more than fifty years of contact, as newspaperman and official, with public affairs, I have been privileged to observe at close range a procession of events and personalities which even yet I look back upon in awe. It seems not possible that all of it could have occurred in one lifetime. Regarding myself, and in no mock modesty, as a very unimportant factor in these events, I have thought primarily to report here on what I saw and upon the men I knew in the course of the pilgrimage. It has been a very happy journey through the swiftly moving times--times which have laid the background and foundation of the world of today. Words cannot express my gratitude for the good health which sustained me, or for the many wonderful persons whom I have met along the road.

I have tried to make this a simple story, told in full ouwerenss that it must be a very indulgent public which gives attention in these momentous times to the backward look of any man. The hope that in such a review of the past may be found some clue to the enigma of the future is my chief excuse for this book.
