The Life and Correspondence of Lodowick Bryskett

Excerpt

As the friend and companion of Sir Philip Sidney and Edmund Spenser, Lodowick Bryskett is one of the most interesting figures of the Elizabethan period. Moreover, his checkered career throws considerable light upon Irish affairs during the years when Ireland was the home of Edmund Spenser.

In the following pages we have attempted to give his biography in greater detail than has yet appeared. There is a mass of material for such a work that has never been used. His letters preserved among the Irish State Papers are so briefly treated by the compilers of the Calendars that many interesting passages are omitted altogether, and those among the Salisbury manuscripts at Hatfield, which tell us much about the closing years of his life, have, so far as we know, never been used before. Moreover, the autobiographical character of the introductory passages to the three divisions of the Discourse seems not to have been fully recognized by previous biographers.

For kindly help and encouragement our sincere thanks are due to His Grace the Marquis of Salisbury for access to the Hatfield manuscripts, and also to the Rev. W. Stanhope-Lovell, his librarian; to Chevalier W. H. Grattan-Flood, of Enniscorthy; and to W. H. Welply, Esq., of Belfast. For assistance in editing the text of Antonio Bruschetto's Italian letters we are indebted to Professor Ernest H. Wilkins, of the University of Chicago. We desire especially to record our gratitude to the late Frederic Ives Carpenter, sometime professor in the University of Chicago, through whose munificence the publication of this monograph is rendered possible.
