With respect to the University of Rochester there would seem to be a special desirability of having at this time a somewhat full account of why and how it was founded. One reason for this is that the year 1925 marks the seventy-fifth anniversary of its founding, directing attention anew to that event of 1850. Another reason may be seen in the great expansion which the University is undergoing. Both of these things, as well as perhaps others, tend to make measurably detailed information about the origin of the University of particular interest now, and tend to make it more than ever important that such information should, without any further delay, be put into a convenient form for preservation and future reference.

The roots of the University of Rochester penetrate deeper and spread wider than is commonly supposed, while those of Colgate University, which are of related interest, clearly run comparatively far back in the history of higher education in America.
