Excerpt

I have of set purpose avoided the introduction of footnotes into this book. One result of this avoidance has been my inability to make adequate recognition of my indebtedness to other writers. That indebtedness is considerable--for facts, for interpretations, also for phrases which have stuck in one's mind as a result of one's reading, and are not always easily traceable to their source. To all those upon whom I have drawn in these or other ways I extend my grateful thanks. I cannot mention them all, but I must at least specify the historical works of Professor Walker and Gie, Mrs.Millin The South Africans, and Professor Leppan's writings on South African agriculture. Certain other works are mentioned in the text.
