On many a romance dust lies thick. Its glitter tarnishes like an old silver buckle. Its laughter is forgotten with last June's roses. Its beauty lost in the pale twilight of unremembered dusks.

Yet such time as they lived to be the playthings of Destiny many of these that are now obscure and forgotten made passing fair names for themselves and influenced their generation. And although their names may have been merely local reputations, their stories--piquant and romantic, evil or good--were products of their eras. However insistently Fate dogged their footsteps, it played its game according to the rules of their time and place. To reconstruct their lives one needs must reconstruct the milieu in which the comedy of those lives was played. The process presents a phase of their epoch.
