Over the past twenty-five years, I have been actively engaged as a clinical psychologist working with children and adolescents. The major focus of my work has been on teenagers and their parents. I have had opportunities to see adolescents as patients on an outpatient basis, in an inpatient setting, and during consultations with schools and community agencies. On a more personal basis, I helped parent two wonderful young persons -- one now in his 20s, the other in her early 30s -- through their adolescent years. A major motivation for writing this book is to help people, particularly mental health professionals such as clinical psychologists and social workers, teachers, guidance counselors, youth group leaders, clergy, and other adult care givers who are involved with the critically important task of enabling teenagers to grow up successfully.

As a professional and a parent, I have become very alarmed by the numerous difficulties young people face growing up in today's society. I'm concerned that there is a growing number of young people in our country who do not have the kind of resources available to them to grow up successfully.
