The articles that are brought together in this'little book were first published, in practically their present form, in the Magazine Section of the New York Herald Tribune. Although written in a somewhat casual style, they contain a sort of residue or precipitate of an intimate acquaintance with collegiate youth extending over a good many years. It must be admitted, however, that the number of years does not make as much difference as does the nature of the acquaintance. The kind of question that the Dean of a college is called upon to answer, involving as it often does heredity, capacity, ambitions, weak spots of character as well as strong ones, gives him a chance to see further into the mind and heart of youth than almost any other person. I have tried in the following pages to bring together some of the results of my attempts to aid in solving these personal problems. I
