Like all research projects, this book is as much the product of the scholarly community as it is an individual effort. Beyond the works referenced and the research assistants thanked in the text, countless friends and colleagues have contributed to this project. The most notable of these contributions was made by John Oneal, who not only helped me with the data necessary to replicate the Oneal and Russett (1997a, 1997b) research, but also ran analyses, co-authored parts of Chapter 4, and helped me focus many of the theoretical points I was struggling to express. Similarly, A. Cooper Drury also played a very active part in this project. He ran several statistical analyses to double-check my work, and his help was essential in using the disaster aid data that he and Richard Olson had developed. I would like to thank both Cooper and Rich for allowing me to use the data. I would also like to thank Cooper for the countless phone calls and e-mails where he served as a sounding board, helping me come to grips with many of the diverse methodological challenges of the study. Similarly, the foreign development aid research that I co-authored with Steve Hook played an important part in bringing Chapter 8 together and his help has been invaluable.
