Excerpt

Here are gleanings from a period of fifty years, largely devoted to activities other than literature. "The Poetry of Matthew Arnold" was a Warton Lecture before the British Academy. "Some Dates in Coleridge's Annus Mirabilis" was one of the Essays and Studies by members of the English Association. "Meredith's Nature Poetry" and "Alice Meynell's Rhythm of Life" were contributed to The Academy. "The Dedicated Life" was a lecture at Abercromby House in the University of Liverpool. "The Study of English Literature" was an Introduction to a school-book published by Messrs. Blackie & Son, Ltd. "The Timelessness of Poetry" was a Presidential Address to the English Association. "Ghosts in the Bodleian" was read at a meeting of the Friends of the Bodleian. "Oxford Revisited" appeared as Ghosts in The Pelican Record, the journal of my College of Corpus Christi, Oxford. My gratitude is due to all those who originally gave hospitality to these studies. "Matthew Arnold's Tree" and "Meredith's Modern Love" have not been printed before. War-time forbids a dedicatory page. I can, therefore, only record here how much this book, like all my literary work, owes to the sympathy and patience of my wife.
