Among the debts which it is my duty and pleasure to acknowledge I must first mention the one I owe to the people who are described in this book. In the course of intensive research into their lives and works I have, as it were, made friends with them, and they have amply rewarded my labours. These men ("some of peculiar genius, all touched by a common genius") have taught me to see both past and present in a new light; getting to know them has enriched my life.

The dedication of this book seeks to express my gratitude to my father, whose love and kindness were unceasing and unbounded.

Next, I want to thank my mother for her loving care, her teaching, and her example; my wife for sharing my interests to the full and for much patient help; my brother for providing me with the vivid experience of brotherliness; and my sister- in-law for many stimulating suggestions. I also wish to record my gratitude for the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Barclay Baron, who, after I bad to leave Prague, enabled me to complete my studies in England.

Of my earlier teachers, I owe most to the late Dr. Eugen Lieben, who awakened my interest in history and social ethics, and taught me the meaning of justice and charity by living what he taught. My readers will have no difficulty in ascertaining that I have been powerfully influenced by the published writings of Ernst Troeltsch and R. H. Tawney. Professor Tawney has, in addition, helped me throughout by kind encouragement and invaluable advice. Like countless others, I owe much to Professor G. D. H.
