The story about communities, corporations, and the emergent American society told in this small book is a large and complex one. Despite its scope and many themes I have chosen to tell it briefly and simply. No more than illustrative evidence is presented; detail, citation, and proof are left largely to other publications. Research now in progress continues to probe the scientific problems and test the hypotheses here presented.

It is contended that local communities in America have lost much of their previous autonomy, but this loss is no more than one movement in a larger transition, an emergent process, in which the more significant development is the coming into being of a great society. The whole American society is rapidly growing into one primary community, in which corporations along with other complex hierarchical structures play their significant and necessary roles. Change is built into the very nature of this social system, most innovations originating from within, not from without; yet to maintain order and still change, this society continuously incorporates its persistent past into its moving future.

As part of this process the rationality of science and technology seeps through the values, beliefs, and practices of the national society, its several parts, and many institutions. Meanwhile, opposing non-rational moral values grow, expand, and flow through public opinion, law, government, and other institutions to lodge more and more firmly at the national level. Here, the secular part of the moral order, through the instruments of federal law and its agencies and through the reinforcements of national opinion and its moral values . . .
