Luther and the Modern State in Germany

Excerpt

This volume addresses a topic which, though often the object of ambushes and flank attacks from several scholarly directions, is seldom assaulted head-on. Five scholars discuss connections between Luther and the development of the modern state in Germany from two different angles. For some, the principal question is whether there is in fact a discernible relationship between what Luther taught and the subsequent growth of princely absolutism in Germany. For others, there is a further issue as to how Luther has been and is understood by those who invoke his teaching in order to legitimize a particular conception of the state.
