The title first settled on for this book was Determinations in Literary Criticism. It was with a view to enforcing a clear and full conception of literary criticism, its function, scope and responsibilities--to enforcing the conception of literary criticism represented by the book--that those inclusions were made which led to the change of title. Not that the contributing critics are exhibited as subscribing to a common programme or credo. What they have in common is to have appeared, appropriately, in Scrutiny: their work is offered as a representative choice.

To suggest the spirit of Scrutiny's preoccupation with literary criticism I may, perhaps, be permitted to quote what as an Editor I wrote in its pages:
