'Anything, though ever so little, which a man speaks of himself in my opinion is still too much.' So says John Dryden. In writing an autobiography, one can only observe in the breach, without necessarily being disrespectful, this ex cathedra dictum of a Poet Laureate and one of the greatest English men of letters. In my case, I have undertaken this task for three reasons.

First, three firms of publishers of international repute have paid me the compliment of offering to publish my autobiography. When approaches were made to me in 1957, I felt somewhat flattered, and made up my mind to accept the best of the three offers, which I did in February this year when a contract was entered into between me and my present publishers. Under the stimulus of the offers made to me, I started work on this book on 18 July 1957, on board m.v. Aureol when I was going on holiday to the United Kingdom. But from that time up to the end of 1959, I only succeeded, in the midst of my multifarious official and political duties, in making a draft of the first four chapters, and assembling much information and data on which I have drawn for the completion of this work. Having lost the last federal election, I am able to devote more time than ever before to writing, which is one of my few hobbies. On 8 February of this year, I resumed work on the book, starting with a revision of the first four chapters. Secondly, I believe that some of the things which I have to say in my autobiography will help to refresh the memories of my contemporaries, and supply to the younger generation some facts about our political evolution. Thirdly, I also believe that certain events in my life and the manner in which I have faced them may serve as a source of inspiration and hope to some struggling youth. The usual recipe for success is not wanting . . .
