The Basis of Obligation in International Law, and Other Papers

Excerpt

This book does not aim at providing a complete collection of Professor Brierly's articles and addresses. The Editors have thought it desirable to omit those which, by reason of their somewhat topical character or repetition of what is substantially contained in his other writings, could justifiably be omitted. They believe that together with Professor Brierly's principal writings--The Law of Nations, The Outlook for International Law, and his course of Lectures given in 1936 at The Hague Academy of International Law under the title 'Règles générales du droit de la paix'--the present volume gives a fairly complete picture of his contribution to international law.

The Editors wish to express their appreciation of the decision of the Delegates of the Clarendon Press to publish this collection of Professor Brierly's papers and of the permission given by the various journals, institutions, and individuals concerned for their reprinting. They also wish to express their appreciation of the permission given by the Institute of International Law and by the Royal Institute of International Affairs respectively, for the inclusion in the book of the biographical note and of the appreciation of Brierly's contribution to international law which appear in the Introduction. They are greatly indebted to the printers and compositors for the scholarly care which they have bestowed upon their task.
