As history became an academic profession in America, the discipline fractured into a multitude of separate fields. Following a pattern common to all of the scholarly professions, each of these academic sects had its own distinguished and sometimes charismatic leaders, a journal, and a subject which the group staked out as its special concern. American history was severed from the history of Western Europe. Within the field of American history, political historians marked off their domain, as did the specialists in social and intellectual and economic history. The process of differentiation continued, with particular interests such as American economic history breaking down into separate fields: labor history, agricultural history, and business history, among others
