The purpose of this book is to provide the serious student of Catholicism, be he Catholic or non-Catholic, with those materials which will put him in basic and solid contact with the theology and prayer of the Church.

There are many anthologies that serve a useful purpose in this direction. But we prefer to think that we have not composed an anthology. Rather, we have allowed the theologians of Europe and the United States, each of them skilled in a special way, to write a book for us; we have helped them, so to speak, in tying their separate competencies together and in unifying their separate images within a total painting. It is a painting of the total image of Catholicism, the parts not chosen at random but all set and related within the central and master ideas that unify them. We have ourselves chosen the master ideas and central patterns, though of course they were lying in wait for us.
