This book is an expanded and revised work based on a doctoral dissertation that I had the intellectual stimulation and sheer enjoyment of supervising in my role as chairman of the Dissertation Committee in the Graduate School of Business at the University of Washington. The dissertation was chosen as the very best in 1986 by both the Society of Industrial-Organizational Psychology of the American Psychological Association and the Division of Organizational Behavior of the Academy of Management. The awards from these two scholarly societies were in response to Dr. Frayne's ground- breaking developments in teaching employees the science of self- management. The two awards underscored the scientific rigor with which Dr. Frayne had conducted her work, as did the publication of her findings in the prestigious Journal of Applied Psychology.
