The Chinese Financial System

Excerpt

The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) has provided generous financial aid to facilitate the transfer of management technology to China under the Canada-China Management Education Program (CCMEP). Through CCMEP, Canadian universities are linked with Chinese counterparts in an effort to upgrade the delivery and quality of management education in China. Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, and Xiamen University in Xiamen, China, are linkage partners under this program.

This book is the result of the joint research efforts of Canadian and Chinese scholars under the auspices of the Dalhousie/Xiamen University Linkage Program. As reforms were undertaken in China, the financial system of the pre- 1979 era changed rapidly to accommodate the financial needs of economic reconstruction. This book provides the essential structure of the Chinese financial system as it had evolved by the 1990s. Considering the political, economic and social conditions that prevailed before 1979, the development of the Chinese financial system by 1990 is quite a commendable achievement.

Major funding for the study was provided by CIDA through the Dalhousie/ Xiamen University Linkage Program, the Dalhousie University School of Business Administration, and the Douglas Mackay Foundation for International Banking. Many thanks are due to the Centre for International Business, Dalhousie University, and the Management Education Centre, Xiamen University, for personnel and facilities used for research purposes.

We wish to thank our many research assistants and acknowledge that any remaining errors in the book are ours.

The authors are heavily indebted to Leslie Stockhausen, who prepared the camera ready copy pages of this book.
