In presenting these volumes of Mr. Hayward's Letters to the public, I feel it to be my first duty to state distinctly that they do not pretend in any way to contain a 'Life' of him. Unfortunately, among his papers, which on his death passed into his sister's hands, there were no diaries, or journals, or autobiographical memoirs; in fact, nothing from which a connected story of his life could be produced; but from the correspondence found among his papers and from his own letters, courteously placed at my disposal by his friends, I have carefully made a selection which forms the chief contents of these volumes.

I have, where I could, inserted all the most striking and interesting incidents of his life, which are preserved in his friends' memories, or his own writings. Mr. Hayward's own letters possess the remarkable merit of giving us a sketch of the men and women who were his contemporaries, while at the same time they undesignedly disclose a great deal of his own true nature, more especially that kindlier side of it which, if oftentimes masked by the energies of a fiery, combative spirit, was still very real.

Moreover, these letters contain nearly all that can be authoritatively stated concerning his "life." A sketch, indeed, of his early years, prior to the date of the first . . .
