Recent inventions and discoveries have added greatly to the control that men are able to exercise over nature and society, and have so filled the horn of plenty that the entire western world stands on the threshold of an abundance economy. Multitudes have already entered the promised land and have enjoyed its freedom from poverty and hardship.

Production improvements, planning, organization and the direction of social forces have brought men within sight of the day when the necessities and decencies of physical life can be brought to nations and entire continents more easily than they have been provided for the favored few in periods of backwardness and scarcity. Today men are technical masters of their own destiny.

Poverty and unemployment have challenged the hope of peace and plenty. Economic chaos and war have gone far to extinguish it. Today millions are wondering, questioning: "Can we keep ourselves from the abyss toward which we seem to be slipping? By what means will we most effectively secure and stabilize the life, liberty and happiness which we seek?"

Many peoples, particularly those living in Western Europe and in the new worlds of the Americas and Australasia have answered: "Democracy is the way out." In the name of democracy a commodity economy based on scarcity and private profit is to be perpetuated; in the name of democracy the forgotten man is to be rediscovered and social security is to be provided; in the name of democracy aggression is to be suppressed and the planet is to be policed; in the name of democracy the masses are to be liberated from tyranny and the Four Freedoms are to be established.

Events of the past thirty years have called these assumptions into question. Will popular rights and mass well-being survive economic depression, war and the relentless drive of privilege to enlarge the sphere of its vested interests? Can democratic process . . .
