COLLEGE is a term which means so many different things to so many different people that the Semanticists ought to have a field day with it. To the youngster who talks of "going away to college" it is a place of dreams where even a brief residence transforms one into that social and intellectual creation known as a college-bred man. To the old graduate it is synonymous with a fragment of his own youth; an embodiment of memories more sentimental than intellectual. To the grown man who never went to college it suggests an experience which whispered to more fortunate men some important secret obtainable no other way, initiating them into a mystic brotherhood of "alumni." To the sport and athletic fan it is an adjunct of football, requiring a rigmarole of exams and marks and classroom attendance before a player can become eligible. To the Hollywood producer it is an assemblage of pulchritudinous co-eds and worldly-wise young fellows who spend their days amid ivied architecture engaging in juvenile pranks, and their nights in dissipation.

The student west of the Alleghenies seldom uses the word "college"; he speaks always of "school." On the eastern seaboard school precedes college, and the two terms are not interchangeable. Even those who use the word in their daily business do not always use it in the same way; for sometimes they mean a place for specialized training, as a "law college," and sometimes as in "Harvard College" a place devoted solely to the liberal arts.

What is a college? I wish I knew for sure, because I want to write about it. Certainly it is a place where the young are . . .
