Excerpt

Our decision to limit the papers published in this volume to essays and studies of the drama and matters relating to the drama was due to the fact that that has been the principal, though by no means the only field in which Professor Parrott has taught and worked and directed the researches of students. It is much to be regretted that this limitation of subject prevented a considerable number of his pupils from sending contributions. Many of his pupils so excluded have shown active interest and encouragement in the issue of this volume. Even with the limitation described it has of course been necessary, so varied are the fields of study of the contributors, to interpret the subject of drama very broadly.

The papers are arranged approximately in the order in which the writers pursued their studies under Dr. Parrott's direction. The editor has not made a very serious attempt to secure uniformity among the papers, but, as regards form, has contented himself with certain rather obvious matters. He would like to express his gratitude and that of others interested in this enterprise to Professor Willard Thorp of Princeton University for his important share in rendering the publication possible and assisting in it in various ways. The support of Mr. C. W. McAlpin of the Princeton class of 1888 and other members of that class has helped to make possible the publication of these papers.
