Excerpt

The following essays were delivered originally as papers at a symposium held at The University of Alabama in October 1974. If the gathering was indeed the success that many kind people declared it to be, then most of the credit is due these scholars who participated with their writing, time, wit, and conversation.

The proceedings speak largely for themselves, I believe, requiring little by way of editorial introduction to justify or explain them. The purpose of the symposium was to bring together some of the best available Faulkner commentators and ask them to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the appearance of The Marble Faun, the author's first published volume. They have done so admirably.

It remains then, to thank publicly the administration of The University of Alabama and the College of Arts and Sciences for their willing and unrestricted support of the original symposium and to state again my appreciation to numerous members of the Department of English, faculty, graduate students, and secretaries who contributed generously to its success. Also, special thanks go to the staff of The University of Alabama Press for their expert assistance on the book itself.
