Excerpt

'GREEN AS BEGINNING,' Dylan Thomas once began a poem, but of his own ending, he wrote, 'Green and dying.' Yes, we were green at our beginning, when we were savages in the woods. A savage is somebody who lives in the trees, a person who feels a part of all growing things and living things, even though he may gather or hunt them.

Civilisation and pollution followed, and we thought we had contaminated the earth. In fact, we cannot do that. Even human ingenuity may not go that far. The Earth or Gaia will survive, whatever we may do to it. It will replace us with other forms of life, if we manage to destroy our species on this planet. We are not as important as we think we are.

This book tells the story of how we came out of the woods as savages when we were sure that we were only a twig on the great tree of being. We forgot that common feeling with nature during the past brief five thousand years of human civilisation, irrelevant to the long life of other organisms upon this Earth. Now we are again conscious of that old bonding with the trees that breathe and the animals which are also alive. We are they once more, while they have always been like us. We are still savages, even if we exist in cities. This is the hope and the secret for all living things on this planet here and now. We are green as beginning again, if we remember how we were. Otherwise, we are green and dying.
