We wish to acknowledge the special assistance given to us by our associates in Moscow, Marina Doguzhieva, Helen Meshkova, and Helen Nikolaeva, particularly in the translation of some of the documents. Dr. Doguzhieva and Dr. Meshkova also helped to interpret at the Congress sessions of the Society for the Philosophical Study of Marxism. Ms. Nikolaeva provided invaluable assistance during the months prior to the Congress, especially in keeping communication lines open with our Moscow contributors and with the secretariat of the Congress. Dr. James Lawler of the State University of New York at Buffalo helped us with information about Russian philosophers. While the book was in preparation, we benefited from translations prepared by Professor Tatiana Mursin of Poughkeepsie, New York, a member of the Association of Russian-American Scholars. During a short visit to Russia in the spring of 1994, Jed Lewison, a senior at Yale University, helped us to complete final arrangements with contributors. Professor Freda Casner of Staatsburg, New York, also gave us valued assistance with translation. We are grateful for the contributions made by these friends and scholars. Of course, responsibility for the contents of the book rests solely with the editors.

It should be added that András Gedö paper was published (in a slightly different form) in German in Marxistische Blätter in April 1992. The papers of John J. Neumaier andVladimir N. Shevchenko were published (in a slightly different form) in Russian in Moscow in Sotsiologicheskiye Issledovaniye/Sotsis (Sociological Studies) no. 2, 1994. All are printed here with the permission of the original publishers.
