The Education of Chaucer: Illustrated from the Schoolbooks in Use in His Time

Excerpt

The success of my book on The Education of Shakespear has encouraged me to attempt a similar work on The Education of Chaucer. As in the earlier volume, the material I use is based entirely on manuscripts in my own library. Although some of these are not exactly contemporary with Chaucer, each is illustrative of the works used in his time.

I wish to express my appreciation particularly to Professor George L. Kittredge, who first suggested this book, for his valuable advice and assistance, also to the following people who have been good enough to read over various sections of my manuscript:-- Professor Harry M. Ayres, Professor Charles S. Baldwin, Samuel A. Ives, Esquire, Professor John L. Lowes, Professor John Manly, Professor F. N. Robinson, Professor David Eugene Smith, Professor Bartlett J. Whiting, and my wife, Fanny Hastings Plimpton.
