This technique is known as mental imagery or visualization, and this book tells you how to use it to help people become more effective managers.

Management is an abstract action for many people. the management functions of planning, staffing, leading, and controlling are difficult for many people to visualize concretely. and yet, in order to be effective, managers must perform desirable behaviors just as an athlete must perform a set of desirable behaviors required for managerial effectiveness.

By using mental imagery we can clearly see in our mind how we should perform in a particular situation for maximum effectiveness. We can mentally rehearse the desired behaviors prior to performing them. We can anticipate possible problems that can emerge and prepare for them in anticipation. We can prepare contingency plans. We can learn from possible mistakes before we make the mistake.

In short, mental imagery allows us to adopt a whole new approach for practicing management. It forces us to take a performance orientation and requires us to think through the specific behaviors required for top performance.
