Lesbian Family Relationships in American Society: The Making of an Ethnographic Film

Synopsis

This book explores intimate relationships in lesbian families living in American society. From an insider's point of view, it examines how relationships within these families form and develop, what special concerns and problems result, what personal gains the family members derive from these types of families, and how motherhood and parenthood evolve. This work is a companion to Dr. Asten's ethnographic video, Intimate Relationships in Three Lesbian Families Living in American Society.

Excerpt

This ethnographic study of four lesbian families living in American society is the result of participant observation and feminist participatory research. It considers lesbian families from an insider's point of view, and asks several different questions: How do relationships within a lesbian family form and function? How is "family" defined for these particular four lesbian families? What are the special concerns and/or problems for lesbian families? What are the positive things each person gains from growing up in a lesbian family? What shapes do motherhood and parenthood take in a lesbian family? Intended for scholars and students of gay and lesbian studies, feminist studies, sociology, psychology, American or cultural studies, and anthropology, this book can be used as a primary or supplementary text for university courses that focus on lesbian families, visual anthropology, women's studies, and feminist research methodologies.

An ethnographic sixty-minute video on intimate family relationships within lesbian families accompanies the book.

Chapter 1 describes the purpose and significance behind the study. Chapters 2 through 5 covers the families' ethnographic stories, including immediate and extended family relationships. Chapter 6 provides a summary of the findings and compares and contrasts the four families. It also includes recommendations for further research on lesbian families. The ten appendices address the methodology for this study: Appendix A explains a feminist ethnographical approach to lesbian studies. Appendix B defines participatory observational cinema and the role of the filmmaker. Appendix C describes the research process and how the families were identified. Appendix D covers a description of introducing the camera as part of the research process and as a tool for collecting the research . . .
