Hofstra University is very pleased to present this volume of the proceedings of its Albert Einstein Centennial Conference.

In recent years, Hofstra has become an international conference center attracting scholars from many parts of our nation and abroad. It has been our pleasure to present a series of conferences on subjects which included Feodor Dostoyevski, George Sand, William Cullen Bryant, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Walt Whitman, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and Nineteenth-Century Women Writers. Other conferences deal with Harry S. Truman, Washington Irving, Jose Ortega y Gasset, Dwight David Eisenhower, George Orwell and Twentieth- Century Women Writers.

We are pleased that the scholarly deliberations of the participants at our conferences will be reaching a wider audience through the printed word. Through this volume and its successors, new research will find its way to libraries, scholars and students. The commitment to scholarship, as typified by the Hofstra conferences, is wholly consistent with the principle that the university should be the arena for ideas.
