Excerpt

Almost certainly the novel published here under the title of THE LOST CONTINENT was the rarest and most sought-after science-fiction novel that Edgar Rice Burroughs ever wrote. It was one of his earliest works, and appeared in print but once during his lifetime, complete in a single issue of an obscure magazine, the Feb. 1916 issue of All-Around Magazine. It bore the strange title of Beyond Thirty.

Only the most advanced Burroughs collectors even knew of the work's existence. The only form I ever saw it in was a smudged carbon of some other collector's laboriously typed copy from still some other person's jealously guarded magazine copy. It was not until 1957 that Bradford Day brought out a limited edition book which made Beyond Thirty available.

Yet this rare novel is in the true Burroughs style -- a glorious adventure in a jungle world, with the added spice of the author's science-fictional and sometimes sardonic views of the future. In this present edition, the first one available to the general public, we have changed the title to one a good deal less obscure. We think readers will agree that even though Burroughs made his future prediction during the early years of World War I, there are still many elements about his vision of the 22nd Century that may not be too far-fetched.
