Excerpt

I am the deer, the big-eyed doe, the spotted fawn, the fugitive from the hounds.

The wind shouts in my ears. the woods blur. My feet find the unseen path. Run is all I know. Run.

Down the hill, away from the sudden noise, the unexpected presence, my heart eases its rapid beat. Cautiously, now I seek the spring, the cool water. Through the brush screen, the pool appears safe. I come slowly to the edge and bend down. Face meets reflection; lips touch water. Lost in the taste of liquid cool, the deer vanishes.

I am separated from what I have been. I am now the straight-haired girl reflected in shallow water.

This is the summer that I am twelve years old, a time when I can still find the place in my mind where I-am-the- deer and not ask whether this is reality. It is the summer of my vision quest, the summer my best friend is a dead Indian whom I met on that quest.

Maybe, if I had told someone, they would have said that . . .
