Psychological inquiry proceeds in large degree by comparison. Since the inception of psychology, several far-reaching types of comparison have accrued to the psychologist's basic experimental armamentarium. Principal among these are animal, developmental, cross-cultural, and statistical comparisons. Together they furnish data and theory describing and explaining behavior from points of view requisite to a comprehensive psychology. Historically, however, the value and critical relevance of comparisons like these to the conduct of psychological research and to the nature of psychological theory have been underemphasized.

The purpose of Comparative Methods in Psychology is to make available to the psychological community thoughtful essays that examine the history, philosophy, theory, methodology, and experimentation representative of major comparative methods. The chapters in this collection are intended to introduce students of psychology to specialized modes of comparison from the perspectives of prominent contributors and to promote mutual discussion among comparativists of issues and concerns common to all types of comparison. In this respect it is fortunate for this collection that a group of outstanding comparativists could be enlisted to summarize, examine, interpret, and evaluate these century-old comparative methods.

The chapters in Comparative Methods in Psychology are organized into two sections. Following brief introductory observations, principal comparisons are treated in Part I; included are perspectives from animal behavior, development, cross-cultural studies, and statistics. Part II, on derivative comparisons, captures the tendency among comparativists to invoke one or another's domain either formally or metaphorically; included . . .
