Nothing can mollify the sky,
the river knows
only its weight and solitude, and heat, sun-tempered
cold,
and emptiness and birds : a boat : trees, fine white sand,
and deltas of cool mud : porpoises : crocodiles :
and rafts of floating hyacinth : pools and water-whirls
and, nurtured in blue mussel shells, the sunset river
pearls.

The boat hovers over the mussel beds,
and for these the divers go
naked into the water to work with nets and naked
hands.
Split open the shell, the pearl is another world
evolved, revolved from a grit, and here, where the sky
is vast,
the ball of the planet turns, flat below space, finite . . .
