The resurgence of the Islamic ethos is at once spiritual, social, economic, and political in its manifestations. As in centuries past, the hallmark of the contemporary resurgence is a return to Islamic roots-- the fundamentals of the faith as revealed and practiced by the Prophet Muhammad.

The primary concern of this book is to examine the historical roots and patterns of Islamic resurgence and the forms of its manifestation in the crisis milieu of present-day Muslim society. This work does not purport to be a comprehensive study of Islam or its fundamentalist expression. It focuses on political Islam and its revolutionary implications in the Arab world.

It provides some empirical evidence on the fundamentalist movement through the analysis of ninety-one Islamic societies and groups. The compilation of data was accomplished by the staff of the Center for Research and Development, Inc. Originally begun as a report for the United States government, this study has been revised and significantly expanded to include a comprehensive analytical framework and new data on recent developments in the Arab sphere.
