Synopsis

Aging in America imposes dramatic personal, social, and economic changes. Retirees have substantial power to affect both business and public policy decision making. This book analyzes the expenditure patterns of older households to characterize their comparative lifestyles and quality of life. Expenditure patterns of various elderly households are examined over time and compared with the non-elderly. Particular emphasis is placed on analysis of necessity and health care expenditures.

Issues of the economics of aging have been of special interest to the authors of this book for some years, combining concerns for the social and economic welfare of individuals and families with numerous current public policy issues that will have increasing budgetary impacts. This text provides substantive contributions that will materially inform researchers, students, decision makers, service providers, and others concerned about aging in the United States.

The authors' empirical research reported in this book was supported by a series of three competitive grants received from the aarp Andrus Foundation between 1990 and 1994. We are thankful for their substantial support, without which this research could not have been accomplished. the principal investigator on each of these projects was Dr. Rose M. Rubin, who developed and maintained the concept for this book as an underlying theme motivating the proposals for these grants. Dr. Michael Nieswiadomy and Dr. Bobye J. Riney were co-investigators on the first aarp grant, and Dr. Kenneth Koelln was a co-investigator on the other two aarp projects. Additional support was received from University of North Texas Faculty Research Grants and the Texas Institute for Research and Education on Aging.
