This study of the life of Simeon Eben Baldwin developed from a doctoral dissertation accepted by the University of Pennsylvania in 1950. It was written under the supervision of Professor Roy F. Nichols to whom I am deeply indebted for his kindly criticism and encouragement. Professors Robert E. Spiller and E. Sculley Bradley of the University of Pennsylvania read the manuscript and raised issues which stimulated me to think further about certain matters. I also wish to acknowledge with thanks the helpful suggestions of Professor Elliott Cheatham of Columbia University who read the manuscript in its entirety.

The research for the volume was undertaken in the Sterling Library at Yale University. The staff was unfailingly courteous and helpful and none more so than Mrs. Zara Jones Powers, Curator of the Historical Manuscripts Collection. The Library graciously granted me permission to use the Baldwin Collection and to publish the results of my study.

The Baldwin family has cordially cooperated from the very beginning of the project. Mrs. Warren R. Gilman, daughter of Simeon E. Baldwin, and Mr. Bradley B. Gilman, his grandson, have answered numerous requests for information and have clarified many matters relating to Baldwin's family life.

Many of Simeon E. Baldwin's contemporaries, associates, and former students have passed on to me their recollections and answered specific queries. Their help was especially valuable in crystallizing my conception of the character and personality of Baldwin.

Miss Joan McQuary and Mr. David Howell Jones of Columbia University Press have assisted and advised me regarding various problems of editing and publishing.

I wish to thank the American Historical Review for permission to use portions of an article I wrote entitled Simeon E. Baldwin and the Clerical Control of Yale, which appeared in that journal in July, 1952.
