The ideas in this small book were originally conceived a few years ago for a lecture delivered at the Seventy-fifth Convocation at Vanderbilt University on the general subject of "Christianity and Political Society." That lecture was later expanded and published in pamphlet form under the title "Democracy and the Christian Faith" and was widely circulated by the Foundation for the Study of Christianity and Democracy at Vanderbilt. The following year I delivered the Gates Lectures at Grinnell College on the same theme. The deep interest everywhere today in the meaning of democracy and the constant requests from many sources for a brief but comprehensive definition of democracy has encouraged me to make available these chapters which comprise the Gates Lectures substantially as they were delivered.
