The USSR's Emerging Multiparty System

Synopsis

Vera Tolz studies alternative political groups in the Soviet Union and reveals the effect they are having on the Soviet political system. In 1990, primarily because of pressure from these unofficial movements, the Communist party was forced to relinquish its constitutionally guaranteed monopoly on power. Tolz presents a brief history of the de-Stalinization period that gave rise to such movements and how these groups came to fruition in the Gorbachev era. Of particular interest is a section discussing specific movements in Moscow and Leningrad.
